Unexplained weight loss: what to tell your doctor

Losing weight when you have not been trying can be unsettling, especially when an online search immediately mentions cancer. There are many possible explanations, including thyroid or digestive problems, reduced food intake, stress, medicines and cancer. Arrange a medical assessment if the loss continues without an intended change in diet or activity. NHS: Unintentional weight loss

Get urgent help if you are acutely unwell

If you are confused, difficult to wake or struggling to breathe, seek emergency care rather than waiting for a weight-loss appointment. Markedly reduced urination or persistent dizziness on standing needs urgent medical advice, especially with vomiting or diarrhoea. These can indicate serious dehydration. NHS: Dehydration

Record the change rather than guessing the cause

Write down your previous weight, the date it was measured, your current weight and the date you first noticed a change. If there are no measurements, say so. Looser clothes or a belt needing a different notch are useful observations, but do not invent a kilogram figure.

MedlinePlus advises assessment for unexplained loss of 5% of usual body weight over six to twelve months or less. For someone previously weighing 60 kg, 5% is 3 kg. This is a prompt to seek care, not a threshold you must reach before asking for help. Other symptoms or continuing loss also warrant assessment. MedlinePlus: Weight loss, unintentional

A single note on paper or your phone is enough. Avoid delaying the appointment while you collect a perfect record. If different scales gave different readings, include that detail instead of presenting the measurements as directly comparable.

Prepare a one-page symptom timeline

  • Weight: previous and current readings, dates, and whether the change was intended.
  • Eating: appetite, skipped meals, portion changes, chewing or swallowing difficulties, and whether food is accessible at home.
  • Digestion: vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal discomfort or feeling full unusually quickly.
  • Other changes: persistent cough, fever, night sweats, a new lump, unusual bleeding, thirst or more frequent urination.
  • Background: recent illness, stress, existing conditions, and all prescribed medicines, supplements and weight-loss products.

These observations help you describe the problem; they do not identify its cause. Weight-loss assessment includes questions about food, symptoms and medicines, while symptoms such as a persistent cough, lump or unusual bleeding deserve attention in their own right. Start with an accessible clinician

In India, a family physician, general physician or nearby government health facility can be a practical first step. Tell the appointment desk that weight loss is unexplained and mention accompanying symptoms. You do not need to decide which cancer specialist to book before a clinician has assessed you.

Bring earlier prescriptions and reports, even if they were obtained at another hospital or diagnostic centre. Ask for an explanation in the language you understand best. A family member can help take notes if you want, but the consultation should still centre on your symptoms and preferences.

The clinician may arrange tests, scans or referral according to the suspected cause. When cancer is considered, the investigation may combine examination, laboratory tests, imaging and sometimes biopsy. There is no single test that diagnoses every cancer. Leave with a follow-up plan

  1. What possible causes are you checking first, and why?
  2. Which test is needed now, and what decision will its result change?
  3. Who will explain the results, and on what date should I contact the clinic if I have not heard?
  4. If the initial tests are reassuring but weight loss continues, when should I return?
  5. Would a dietitian help while the cause is being investigated, and which changes are appropriate for me?

If costs or travel make the plan difficult, say so before leaving. Ask the clinician to separate urgent tests from those that can wait and to put the next appointment in writing. Keep one complete set of results rather than relying on cropped screenshots in several family chats.

If the assessment later confirms cancer, our first cancer appointment checklist for India can help organise the next consultation. Unexplained weight loss alone is not a cancer diagnosis.
