Most cancers in India are found late — often at stage 3 or 4 — because early signs are mistaken for common problems. Cancer found early is usually easier to treat, needs less intense treatment and costs less. None of the signs below means you definitely have cancer. Most have other causes. But if one lasts more than 2–3 weeks, see a doctor and ask, “Could this need a cancer test?”

The 10 danger signals

1. A lump or thickening

In the breast, neck, armpit, testicle, or anywhere on the body, especially if it is hard, painless and growing. See breast lump: what to do next and swollen lymph node.

2. A mouth ulcer or white/red patch that does not heal

Very important for anyone who uses gutkha, khaini, paan, tobacco or smokes. Mouth cancer is among the most common cancers in Indian men. See mouth ulcer that does not heal.

3. Unusual bleeding

Blood in urine, stool, cough or vomit; bleeding between periods, after sex, or after menopause. See bleeding after sex or menopause and blood in stool.

4. A cough or hoarse voice lasting over 3 weeks

Especially in smokers, or when TB tests are negative. See persistent cough.

5. Difficulty swallowing or long-lasting indigestion

Food sticking, pain on swallowing, or new acidity after 40.

6. A change in bowel or bladder habits

New constipation, loose motions, thin stools, or passing urine often or with difficulty.

7. Unexplained weight loss

Losing 5 kg or more without trying. See unexplained weight loss.

8. A change in a mole or a sore that does not heal

Growing, bleeding or irregular moles; wounds that don’t heal in 3 weeks.

9. Constant tiredness, fever or night sweats

Along with paleness, bruising or frequent infections — possible signs of blood cancer. See blood cancer guide.

10. Pain that does not go away

New back, bone, or headache pain that persists or wakes you at night, without a clear reason.

Signs in children

Paleness, bruising, a lump in the tummy, a white glow in the eye in photos, morning headaches with vomiting, or bone pain at night. See childhood cancer.

What to do if you notice a sign

  1. Don’t panic, and don’t wait months. Note when it started and how it has changed.
  2. See a doctor (a general physician is fine to start). Mention any tobacco use and family history.
  3. If a test like ultrasound, endoscopy or biopsy is advised, do it soon. A biopsy does not spread cancer — see biopsy explained.
  4. Keep all reports in one folder. See first appointment checklist.
  5. If you are confused, call our free helpline. A counselor can tell you which specialist and tests to ask for.

Lower your risk

Quit all forms of tobacco (free National Tobacco Quitline: 1800-11-2356), limit alcohol, stay active, eat more vegetables, fruit and whole grains, get the HPV vaccine for girls (see HPV vaccine) and the Hepatitis B vaccine, and take part in free screening at government health centres. See cancer screening tests.

Frequently asked questions

Cancer ke shuruati lakshan kya hote hain?

Common early signs include a lump, a non-healing mouth ulcer, unusual bleeding, long cough, difficulty swallowing, bowel changes and unexplained weight loss. If any lasts 2–3 weeks, see a doctor.

Does cancer always cause pain?

No. Many early cancers are painless, which is why painless lumps and ulcers must be checked.

Can a blood test detect cancer early?

No single blood test detects all cancers. See our guide on whether a normal blood test rules out cancer.

Which doctor should I see first?

Start with a general physician or the nearest government hospital OPD; they can refer you to the right specialist.

I have a sign but no money for tests. What can I do?

Government hospitals offer low-cost tests, and the Ayushman card covers many. Call our helpline for guidance.

You don’t have to face this alone. Ask Disha (chat on this page), call +91 99307 09000, or WhatsApp us. For hospital care in Uttar Pradesh, see ZenHeal Varanasi and ZenHeal Prayagraj.
