Searches like “tumor marker test kya hota hai”, “cancer test name list” and “CA 125 test kya hai” are very common. Many people hope one blood test can say yes or no to cancer. The truth is more careful, and knowing it can prevent both false fear and false comfort.

What is a tumour marker?

A tumour marker is a substance, usually a protein, that may be found in higher amounts in the blood (or urine or tissue) when certain cancers are present. It can also rise for non-cancer reasons. That is why a tumour marker alone cannot diagnose cancer. Diagnosis needs a clinical exam, scans and usually a biopsy.

Common tumour marker tests

Test Mainly used in Can also rise due to (examples)
CA-125 Ovarian cancer Periods, endometriosis, fibroids, pregnancy, liver disease, TB of the abdomen
CEA Colorectal cancer; also some stomach, lung, breast cancers Smoking, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease
PSA Prostate cancer Enlarged prostate (BPH), infection, recent ejaculation or cycling
AFP Liver cancer, some testicular cancers Hepatitis, cirrhosis, pregnancy
CA 19-9 Pancreatic, gallbladder and bile duct cancers Jaundice/blocked bile duct, pancreatitis
Beta-hCG Testicular and some ovarian germ cell tumours; GTD Pregnancy
CA 15-3 Breast cancer follow-up Benign breast or liver conditions

Normal ranges differ between labs and, for PSA, with age. Always compare with the range printed on your report and discuss it with a doctor.

Can a blood test detect cancer?

Not reliably on its own. Many early cancers do not raise markers, and many raised markers are not cancer. Except for PSA in specific situations (a shared decision with your doctor), tumour markers are not recommended as general screening tests for healthy people. Be cautious of “full body cancer test” packages that promise to find cancer with one blood sample.

How doctors actually use tumour markers

  • Supporting a diagnosis along with scans and biopsy.
  • Baseline before treatment, so later values can be compared.
  • Checking response: a falling level often suggests treatment is working.
  • Follow-up: a steady rise over repeated tests may prompt scans to look for recurrence.

Trends matter more than one value. Try to repeat tests at the same lab, because methods differ.

My marker is high. What should I do?

  1. Do not panic. Note the value, the lab’s normal range and the date.
  2. See a doctor (an oncologist if you already have a cancer diagnosis) with all reports.
  3. Your doctor may repeat the test, order a scan, or look for non-cancer causes.

Cancer test name list: what else is used

For screening, proven tests include: Pap smear / HPV test for cervical cancer, mammography (and clinical breast exam) for breast cancer, oral visual examination for mouth cancer (important for tobacco users), and colonoscopy or stool tests for colorectal cancer in some age groups. Diagnosis uses imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET-CT) and biopsy.

Frequently asked questions

Tumor marker test kya hota hai?

A blood (or other) test for substances that may rise with certain cancers. It supports diagnosis and follow-up but cannot diagnose cancer alone.

Can a normal tumour marker rule out cancer?

No. Many early cancers do not raise markers.

Is a high CA-125 always ovarian cancer?

No. Periods, endometriosis, fibroids, pregnancy, liver disease and abdominal TB can also raise it.

What is the normal PSA level?

It depends on age and the lab. Many labs use about 4 ng/mL as a general cut-off, but your doctor interprets it with your age and history.

CEA test is for which cancer?

Mainly colorectal cancer follow-up, and sometimes stomach, lung or breast cancer. Smoking can also raise CEA.

Should I do a full-body cancer marker package?

Generally not as a screening tool for healthy people. Discuss proven screening tests with a doctor instead.

How often are markers repeated after treatment?

It depends on the cancer. Your oncologist sets the follow-up schedule.

Do I need to fast for tumour marker tests?

Usually not, but follow the lab’s instructions, especially if other tests are done at the same time.
